Our Curriculum - Ein Cwricwlwm
The Curriculum for Wales recommends four purposes which guides and underpins all our teaching and learning experiences. The four purposes are designed so that all children and young people will be:
- Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
- Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
- Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
- Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society
The pupils designed the eight characters for our school which represent the four purposes.
Our curriculum is organised around six ’Areas of Learning and Experience’ (AoLEs).This builds on the precedent of the Foundation Phase whilst widening the concept to also recognise the value of learning through experiences.
The Six Areas of Learning and Experience are:
- Expressive Arts (Art, D&T, Music and Drama)
- Health and Well-being
- Humanities (History, Geography and RE)
- Languages, Literacy and Communication (including Welsh)
- Mathematics and Numeracy
- Science and Technology (including ICT)
As well as the six areas of learning, there are three cross curriculum responsibilities: Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competence. We teach with a strong emphasis on the acquisition of skills and knowledge throughout all areas of learning. We ensure that our children are very active learners, having their say on what they wish to learn at the beginning of each new topic. Our pupils are also fully engaged in setting targets for improvement and regularly conduct self and peer assessments.
We are a very high performing school, with our results consistently above County and National levels. Our school motto is ‘Be all you can be’, which is about everyone reaching their potential whatever that may be. Our mindset is that we can all strive to be the best that we can be in terms of academic, behaviour, health, well being, sports, music, art and as citizens of the community. Our curriculum is designed to achieve this. The quality of work in our pupils’ books are often used as exemplars for other schools to follow and are used as training materials for best practice on local Authority training days.
Our curriculum is broad and balanced offering children many exciting and wonderful learning opportunities to develop their spiritual, social, aesthetic, linguistic, mathematical, scientific and technological skills and knowledge. We are also equally concerned with the development of personal qualities, behaviour and conduct.
