At Tavernspite School, we aim to make mathematics and numeracy experiences engaging, exciting and accessible for everyone, ensuring that learners develop mathematical resilience, the ability to embrace challenge as a positive aspect of learning.

We believe that everyone can be ‘good at maths’ and we try hard to make maths and numeracy lessons fun, interesting and enjoyable, so that our learners have a positive view of their mathematical ability.

We are committed to continually improve the standards of teaching and learning in mathematics. Tasks and enrichment activities provided in all classes ensure that numeracy skills and are embedded within all aspects of the curriculum.

Our pupils learn to develop their wonder of number and its role in the world and their lives. They develop a sense of size and estimation in context of everyday life and problems and use our curriculum to help enable them to reach this level of numeracy understanding.

We aim for all children to become mathematical ‘thinkers’, to have the confidence to have a go at problem solving, to have a positive attitude to maths and essentially to gain enjoyment from exploring mathematics and to be able to use mathematical knowledge in all areas of the curriculum with confidence.

In our school, mathematics is taught using a comprehensive scheme, a detailed collection of mathematical resources which allows effective continuity and progression in mathematical skills throughout the school.

Numeracy is the application of mathematical skills and concepts across other areas of the curriculum. The Numeracy curriculum involves a detailed understanding of number systems and problem solving with a great emphasis on mental as well as written methods of calculation; it also demands practical understanding and application through the study of shape, pattern, space, measures and handling data (graphs, diagrams and charts).

Our pupils will learn to be numerate through their own exciting curriculum enabling them to develop towards the four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales. We endeavour to resource and plan opportunities for learners to improve their numeracy skills and use them to improve all other ‘Areas of Learning and Experiences.’

For all of our pupils, real-life examples drawn from the local, national and international environment help them make connections between the concrete and the abstract. Real-life contexts can be used to introduce and explore mathematical concepts, as well as to consolidate them.
