Tavernspite School has an excellent reputation for delivering a dynamic, varied and exciting curriculum to its learners.

This was further evidenced by being awarded ‘Excellent’ for standards by Estyn, the Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales.

Teaching and learning is a major strength at Tavernspite School. We aim to provide a quality education for our pupils. Tavernspite School strives to do its best for each and every pupil in a pleasant working environment where children are able to work to their full potential. It is a community where pupils and staff have the opportunity to flourish in a climate of learning, which seeks to develop integrity, honesty, tolerance, truth and compassion.

The curriculum is the whole learning experience offered by our school. It is not only the lessons and activities which are planned, organised and provided while the children are at school but also the attitudes and values we put forward. This is referred to as the ‘Hidden Curriculum’ and has a great influence on children’s development.

How children learn is as important as what they learn. Our curriculum is broad and balanced offering children many exciting and wonderful learning opportunities to develop their spiritual, social, aesthetic, linguistic, mathematical, scientific and technological skills and knowledge.

We are also equally concerned with the development of personal qualities, behaviour and conduct. For this reason, Tavernspite School encourages:

Our school follows the guidance laid by the ‘Curriculum for Wales (CfW)’ which is statutory for all maintained schools in Wales

Tavernspite school’s curriculum has been developed and planned by our teachers to create a vibrant and bespoke curriculum for our learners providing a balance of knowledge, skills and experiences.

Underpinning our curriculum is the development of the ‘Four purposes’, using these we aim for our pupils to become:

Ambitious, capable learners
Healthy, confident individuals
Enterprising, creative contributors and
Ethical, informed citizens of learning

At our school we have developed ‘child friendly’ characters for each of the ‘Four Purposes’, this is very successful in enabling the children to work hard to develop the qualities demonstrated by these characters.

There is a ‘Friday Afternoon Enrichment Club’ until 3pm for anyone wanting to use it.

Breakfast Club & After School Club

Free breakfast club is available everyday between 8am – 8:30am and after school club is available Monday to Thursday.

School Fundraising

We have a very active school fundraising charity called ‘Friends of Tavernspite School’ (FoTS).

Six Areas of Learning and Experiences

The Curriculum for Wales has six Areas of Learning and Experiences (AoLEs). Individual members of our teaching staff have a lead responsibility for the development of each of these areas at our school:

1. Mathematics and Numeracy

Involving learning through play in the Early Years and in the later stages, includes working both independently and collaboratively with others.

2. Languages, Literacy and Communication

Including Welsh and English, literature and international languages. Welsh language teaching continues to be compulsory, as an additional language, for children who don’t use Welsh as their first language.

3. Health and Wellbeing

Covering the physical, psychological, emotional and social aspects of life, helping pupils make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing and learning how to manage social influences.
