Tavernspite School is a mixed community primary school, with approximately 220 pupils on roll, catering for children from the ages of 3 to 11 from a wide catchment area including Tavernspite, Red Roses, Ludchurch, Llanteg, Lampeter Velfrey and Llanddewi Velfrey. Our school, located in the centre of the small village, is very forward thinking and enjoys an excellent reputation throughout Pembrokeshire and beyond.
Tavernspite school is a vibrant, happy, rural school in the heart of Pembrokeshire and we are confident that we are able to cater for the individual needs of all pupils. Everyone who visits the school is impressed by the atmosphere of friendliness and co-operation, apparent as soon as you come through the front door.
Our Mission Statement ‘be all you can be’ reflects the idea of everyone reaching their potential – emotionally, academically, physically, behaviourally – the cornerstone of Tavernspite CP School. At Tavernspite School we believe that every child is special and each has numerous talents and joys to share with others.
Our school has a wonderful learning environment. The classrooms are modern, spacious and well designed. They are resourced with up-to-date IT equipment including interactive whiteboards, networked PCs, numerous laptops, iPads and Chrome Books. The Foundation Phases benefit from all-weather canopy areas that open directly onto our well-developed outdoor learning facilities including; the discovery area, ponds, log circle and storytelling chair and wildlife areas.
The school hall is large and is used for physical education and dance activities, and is complete with a stage area for drama activities and concerts. There is a well-equipped kitchen which prepares fresh meals daily. The school corridors are spacious and attractively displayed leading to the regularly used school library.
The school is set in stunning grounds and offer ample space for games and activities. Facilities include; an adventure playground, a Pirate Ship play area, nature garden, sports pitches for rugby, netball and football, a tennis court, climbing wall and a range of trim trail and adventurous equipment. We even have a very impressive ‘Bushtukka’, a purpose built outdoor cooking and bushcraft area, complete with a pizza oven, that greatly develops our outdoor learning curriculum and wellbeing of the pupils and staff.
In addition, there is an all-weather track and sports pitches for rugby, netball and football and athletics. During the summer, the school playing field is also used by children for recreational activities.
To enhance our outdoor learning programme, we have an extensive conservation area, impressively developed with the aid of various grants and parental help. It offers exciting opportunities for the children to observe and study a thriving ecosystem.
Outdoor learning and environmental education is very important to our ethos. We are an accredited Pembrokeshire Outdoor School and Forest School. A number of our staff are trained Forest School leaders and regularly take groups of children to nearby woodlands to take part in amazing outdoor learning experiences.
We frequently use the outdoor environment as a learning resource to teach about environmental education. We received the Sustainable Schools Platinum Award in 2013 and have been successfully reassessed every two years since. We were previously voted the ‘Welsh Eco-School of the Year’ and the children and staff form an eco-committee leading innovations throughout the school.
We have such a wonderful school environment that we often host visits from other schools as an example of best practice, this helps to give them ideas and supports them in developing their school grounds in a similar way.
